I had a difficult time naming this page.  Broadly speaking, I like to help and support others.  More specifically, I like to help people develop and grow as humans, students, writers, job seekers, etc.  This involves guiding, advising, counseling, encouraging, educating, and mentoring.  I thought "coaching" was a term that encompassed all of the aforementioned roles and activities.

Counseling
Obviously, my work as a career counselor involves the act of counseling.  It's fun to help undergrads, grad students, and alumni learn more about who they are, explore occupations, choose a career path to pursue, and decide which job offer to accept.  In so doing, I try to create dialogue about the many ways career concerns interface with other important life components such as family, mental health, physical health, hobbies, and so forth.  I love when clients experience "aha moments" - they learn to put words to something they've always known about themselves, they discover a career path about which they feel passionate, or they are offered a job that really excites them.

Advising
My work as a career counselor also involves advising.  I give people advice about resumes, cover letters, interviews, networking, and other related topics.  It's rewarding when students tell me they were offered positions and they think my advice was an integral part of their success.  I also educate students about campus and career resources that I think will benefit or edify them.

Editing
I think my desire to help others grow is the reason I periodically volunteer to edit books and journal articles.  In my current role as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Career Development, I review works which have been submitted to the journal for publication and provide feedback to the authors regarding strengths and weaknesses of their works.  I've also reviewed books for the American Psychological Association and conference proposals for the Society for Vocational Psychology.  While I don't claim to be an expert writer, I hope the feedback I provide helps authors improve their writing - both in the short-term and long-term.

Supporting
As I mention on the commemorating page, I enjoy recognizing others' special occasions.  I think it's important to cheer others on during the peaks (graduations, promotions, weddings, etc) and support them during the valleys (illnesses, break-ups, deaths, etc).  I know I don't support others as much as I should, but I'm trying.
